Blood Orange Juice

Alfio, the farm owner, personally harvests blood oranges from a single farm, squeezes them fresh, and freezes them to preserve their natural flavor. Of the three main varieties (Sanguinello, Taroco, and Moro), he uses Taroco, which has the sweetest flavor. Because it is a single farm, he cannot adjust the flavor, and the juice changes in taste and color every year depending on the weather. This seasonal juice is shipped to Japan immediately after harvesting and processing every year, and delivered to customers.

Blood oranges are only grown in Sicily around Mount Etna. Nowadays they are also grown in Japan, so it's not just on Mount Etna, but the important thing is that they have a large temperature difference. In order to withstand this temperature difference, a lot of polyphenols are produced. And it is these polyphenols that create the bright red color and unique flavor.

According to the farm owner, Alfio, volcanic ash from the repeated eruptions of Mount Etna gives the soil an abundance of minerals. Inside the small, tightly packed fruits, there is a wealth of moisture, like eating juice, and the juice is full of rich flavor. He says that growing organically is not particularly difficult. He says that if you create an environment where trees suited to the soil can grow properly, the trees themselves will grow strong and resistant to diseases and pests.

The Cutici farm is located in Catania, Sicily's second largest city, at the foot of Mount Etna.
The orchard covers an area of ​​4.5 hectares - the size of one Tokyo Dome - and is managed by Alfio alone, who grows the fruit there.

The farm was started by the current producer's grandfather in the early 1900s, and was taken over by his mother, who then began producing wheat, beans, and other crops.
In 1979, with government assistance, there was an opportunity to convert the land to citrus and olive cultivation, and the current owner's father began cultivating blood oranges.

The current owner of the farm used to help with farm work while working as an office worker, but after his father passed away he had to work on the farm alone. As a result, he was unable to devote time to protecting the land from insects and bacteria, and even pests were left unchecked, leaving the land in a state where he was unable to make any changes to it.
However, this had a positive effect later on, and he established a natural cultivation method that is truly organic. Of course, this is because blood oranges themselves are plants that are suited to the land, and over the years, his farm's soil has become suitable for trees. He has maintained a cultivation method that does not violate the laws of nature, and has continued to do so to this day.
